Every year on 15 July, we celebrate World Youth Skills Day, a day that reminds us how important it is to help young people build the skills they need to get good jobs, start their own projects, and most importantly, create positive change.
Here are some things to know:
Skills like teamwork, creativity, and using technology are really important in today’s world.
Many young people are already making a difference with their ideas and innovations.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of World Youth Skills Day, and the theme is all about empowering youth through AI and digital skills.
Check out our special reading list for SDG4: Quality Education, filled with stories that highlight youth empowerment, learning, and future-ready skills.
Rain School (James Rumford): In Chad, children and teachers come together each year to build their school from scratch. A beautiful story of teamwork, creativity, and the joy of learning, showing how problem-solving and determination are key youth skills.
L’école perdue (Tahar Ben Jelloun): Set in a West African village, this story follows a boy’s journey from student to teacher as he brings back his love of learning and helps others dream big, a reflection on how education can empower youth and communities.
Ene-o, NO (Alonso Núñez): A playful rhyming book about a boy afraid of going to school. With warmth and imagination, it helps young readers understand that learning new things may feel scary at first, but it opens up exciting new worlds.
阿米拉的红铅笔 (Amira’s Red Pencil) (安德烈娅·平克尼): After losing her home and voice due to conflict, Amira finds hope again through a simple red pencil. Her journey is a reminder of the power of literacy and self-expression as tools for empowerment and healing.
В стране невыученных уроков (In the land of unlearned lessons) (Л. Гераскина): A magical story where a misbehaving boy learns the true value of school and knowledge. With humor and heart, it highlights how important curiosity and learning are for young minds.
If these books have left you feeling inspired, here are three things you can do to support young people today:
Encourage your friends and classmates to learn a new skill together, for example, coding, drawing, storytelling, or even podcasting!
Ask a teacher, parent, or community leader about starting a youth club where you can share ideas and learn from each other.
Use your digital skills for good by creating a poster, video, or blog post that teaches others something helpful!
